National Career Service Centres For Differently Abled


Vocational rehabilitation of people with disabilities and those from weak social, economic and educational backgrounds still remains a challenge especially for those that could not pursue formal vocational and technical training and education. The National Career Service Centres for Differently Abled or NCSC-DAs, which was earlier known as the Vocational Rehabilitation Centres for Handicapped, play a very unique role in the process.

The role of these centres is to evaluate the residual capabilities of the person with disabilities, support them in the process of planning their career, preparing for retaining and obtaining employment commensurate with their socio-psychological, educational and physical abilities. They also offer non-formal training in the trades best suited to their abilities and weaknesses in selected services, through mobile camps and job fairs. In order to facilitate vocational rehabilitation services to people with disabilities by a partnership with state government agencies, renowned NGOs, financial institutions, corporate sectors, etc.

Objectives

Some of the prime objectives of the National Career Service Centres for Differently Abled are:

  1. Evaluate the remaining capabilities of people with disabilities and assess their suitability for various employment opportunities
  2. Provide vocational guidance and career counselling
  3. Offer non-formal vocational training to those who are otherwise not suitable for the formal mode of vocational training due to severity of disabilities or inadequate educational qualifications
  4. Support people with disabilities in the process of vocational rehabilitation through wage and self-employment
  5. Extend outreach programmes through camps and job fairs
  6. Promote the awareness and sensitise the people with disabilities on the facilities available through various agencies
  7. Coordinate and establish liaison with central and state government agencies, NGOs, corporate sectors, financial institutions for evaluating the benefits offered by these organisations

There are a total of eight National Career Service Centres for Differently Abled housed in disabled-friendly buildings owned by the DGE. They are:

  1. Hyderabad
  2. Mumbai
  3. Kanpur
  4. Delhi
  5. Kolkata
  6. Guwahati
  7. Bhubaneswar
  8. Agartala
