DigiLocker or a digital locker is a service that provides access to real and authentic virtual documents. It is like a digital document wallet where you can store your important documents like your driving license, PAN card, Aadhaar card, Voter ID, policy documents, etc. Personal dedicated cloud storage is assigned to every individual that is linked to their respective Aadhaar number.
This DigiLocker facility helps in eliminating the necessity of physical documents and also enables the sharing of e-documents across government agencies through a mechanism that verifies the authenticity of the online documents.
The DigiLocker initiative was by the Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY) under the Digital India Corporation (DIC)

A mechanism like DigiLocker comes with a variety of benefits, some of which include:
- For the customers
Since DigiLocker eliminates the need for physical documents, there is a significant reduction in cost and also the number of customer complaints regarding non-delivery or delayed delivery of documents. Another benefit of DigiLocker is that the customer can save all important documents in one place and have access to it from anywhere and anytime. They can also share these documents with others easily.
- For the agencies
Not only the general public but also agencies can benefit from DigiLocker. It reduces administrative overheads by minimising the paper and curtailing the verification process. It is also a secure document gateway that acts as a platform between the trusted issuer and trusted verifier with the consent of the citizen. DigiLocker also enables real-time verification of data directly from the government.
Process of opening a Digilocker online
By following these simple steps, you can easily open your DigiLocker account online:
- Visit the official website of DigiLocker. You can also download the application from your play store or app store on your mobile phone.
- Once you open the website, click on “sign up” and enter all the relevant details like name, date of birth, a mobile number that is registered with your Aadhar. Make a security pin and enter your email address.
- Once you enter your unique 12 digit Aadhaar number, you will get two options, OTP or fingerprint. Choose any of the two and proceed.
- Once the process is complete, enter your desired username and password for DigiLocker account creation.
- After registering the dashboard screen of the Digilocker will appear.
Sections of your DigiLocker account
Once you are logged into your DigiLocker account, these are some of the sections that will be visible to you:
- Dashboard
This is the home screen of your account. You will be able to navigate the other sections of DigiLocker from here. It will also show the summary of issued documents and links to get documents from partners integrated with DigiLocker.
- Uploaded documents
This section will help you show all the documents that are uploaded by you. You can easily update the document type and share these documents.
- Issued documents
The URLs and links of digital documents or certificates issued by the government departments or agencies are shown under this section.

डिजिलॉकर ऑनलाइन खोलने की प्रक्रिया

- डिजिलॉकर की आधिकारिक वेबसाइट पर जाएं। आप अपने मोबाइल फोन पर अपने प्ले स्टोर या ऐप स्टोर से भी एप्लिकेशन डाउनलोड कर सकते हैं।
