Himmat is an initiative of the Delhi Police, especially for women. Himmat is an emergency service consisting of an Android emergency app that can send an emergency call or message to the Delhi police officers and a specific contact or group in an emergency situation that a woman is facing. Police employees receive these SOS messages and locations in a portal and also as SMS on their mobile phones.
Launched in 2015, the app has had few takers over the past two years. A total of 91,682 women have installed it on their phones so far and the app has 31,859 registered users. “Low” installs and lower usage were analyzed accordingly.
It was felt that the app’s registration process should be streamlined and also target Hindi-speaking women. In the past, registering in the app required filling out 13-14 fields that shared details about itineraries, office address, etc. and the user was also required to provide five emergency contact numbers. These fields have now been reduced to six and prior to registration, one will have the option to select a preferred language, Hindi or English.
Registration process
You can register yourself by following the steps given below:
- Go to Google Play Store, Apple Store or Delhi Police Department website.
- Download/INSTALL the Himmat Plus app. The app will ask you for access to your contacts, location, wifi, etc. click OK.
- Option to choose between Hindi and English.
- Once you have selected the language, you will be prompted for a registration key. If you are a first-time user, click REGISTER. The following mandatory information is required to register the application:
a) Your name b) Your cell phone number c) An emergency number
- After registration, you will receive a 6-digit key to your registered mobile phone number.
- Enter this on the application screen. If you are already registered but do not have a 6-digit password, select the FORGOT PASSWORD option on the registration screen. A new KEY will be sent to you. Entering the password will take you to the interface screen. Visit the home page for Delhi Police Notices/News.
- Go to the SETTINGS option at the top right.
- Update your emergency number. In the SOS SETTINGS, you can select your emergency message. You can also use the ADD CONTACT option to add the number of people who will be notified in the event of an emergency from your phone book.
- Then click on SAVE. The third option under SETTINGS takes you to the ALERTS page. Here you can choose how you want to send the SOS signal.
- You can select “Enable POWER BUTTON” or “Enable SHAKE ALERT”. You can ENABLE or DISABLE SOS according to your needs.
