With the nation now accepting digitisation as a need of the hour, several departments around the country have now started embracing it as a way of life moving forward. To encourage this idea and benefit from it, the Ministry of Civil Aviation has initiated biometric-based digital processing of passengers at airports called Digi Yatra. Digi Yatra not only makes travel all the more seamless but adds essential layers of security to the whole experience.

Objectives of the Digi Yatra Yojana

To enhance air travel by offering a seamless, paperless experience to all passengers
Biometric assistance to make getting in and out of airports swifter and more secure so that passengers do not waste too much time waiting in queues
Cutting down the costs for both – passengers and airports

Airports targeted for implementation of Digi Yatra

In order to get the most out of the scheme, the rollout will be Pan India ie. any passenger in any airport in the country would be able to avail the ease and comfort of Digi Yatra.

The scheme will ease out the process for the following passengers:

First time and frequent flyers in India
Group travellers and families
Foreign citizens and tourists alike

The enrolment process

The enrolment procedure of the Digi Yatra Yojana is as follows:

For the passengers, Digi Yatra will be a centralised registration system. The passengers will be enabled to create a Digi Yatra ID in a centralised system by providing the basic personal details like name, email ID, mobile number and identity details like voter ID, Aadhar card, etc
Once the details are submitted, the system will provide the passengers with their Digi Yatra ID. the passengers can then quote this number while booking their airline tickets. The passenger’s data which includes the Digi Yatra ID will be passed on to the departure airport by the airlines.
The passenger will have to go to the registration counter at the airport on their first travel to validate the Digi Yatra ID. the verification will be done online in the case of Aadhar whereas, in the case of other IDs, CISF will be verified manually.
Once the verification is done successfully, the photo of the passenger will be added to the Digi Yatra profile linked to the central system.

Procedure at Airports

If the passenger has a Digi Yatra ID, the airport procedure will look something like this:

Once the passenger reaches the airport, at the entry point E-Gate, the passenger will have to scan their boarding pass or their e-ticket in print or soft-copy.
Once the bar code or QR code is scanned, the central system will verify and validate the passenger’s details and flight details
The passenger’s Digi Yatra ID will verify the identity of the passenger through face recognition.
Once the verification of the ticket and Digi Yatra ID is successful, the e-gate will open. Moreover, the face with ticket PNR is converted into a single token for the rest of the journey at the airport
The passenger will then gain entry to the security area and board the aircraft through an e-gate which is operated by a facial recognition system.
